Former Global Business Editor of The Economist and co-founder of the Social Progress Index, Matthew Bishop, has been named a Senior Fellow by the Sorenson Impact Center at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business

“Matthew is one of the world’s leading minds in impact,” said Geoff Davis, Sorenson Impact Center CEO.  “Matthew’s addition to the team immediately elevates our ability to help realize with our partners our shared vision of a more equitable and thriving future for humanity and the planet.”

A London native and Oxford University graduate, Bishop spent 25 years at The Economist where among other work he amplified innovative ideas in impact investing, systems change, entrepreneurship and philanthropy, coining the term "philanthrocapitalism.” Bishop served as global business editor, New York bureau chief, Wall Street editor, and economics correspondent. He later served as a managing director at the Rockefeller Foundation and led the Bellagio Center.

As co-founder and board member of the Social Progress Imperative, Bishop helped develop the Social Progress Index, a more effective and insightful measure than GDP of how a society is performing for its people. Bishop has also authored several influential books, including “Philanthrocapitalism"; "The Road From Ruin” and "Economics A to Z". He was the official report author for the groundbreaking G8 Taskforce on Social Impact Investing in 2015.

At the Sorenson Impact Center, Bishop will lend his vast experience and sought-after thought leadership to a variety of key strategic initiatives including research, writing and convening, as well as chairing a new global impact leadership network.

"I'm excited to be joining such a high impact, purpose-driven team, committed to building a better world," says Bishop.

“As a non-profit within a renowned institution of higher learning, the Center is an invaluable independent resource for those of us who think about, write about and shape efforts to create positive impact in the world,” said Bishop. “The Center’s wide-ranging work and expertise, spanning investing and public finance, impact measurement and storytelling, give it unique insights and a crucial voice on how to better deliver impact.”

Bishop joins former Utah congressman Ben McAdams as a senior fellow at the Center.

“The senior fellowship program at the Sorenson Impact Center provides us the opportunity to bring in the best and brightest minds in the impact space,” said Jim Sorenson, founder of the Sorenson Impact Center. “The addition of Matthew Bishop will bring incredible value to the Center and deepen the collective work focused on the power of private capital to further social progress.”

In addition to his work at the Center, Bishop holds a number of other roles, including serving as a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institute.
